MPL X Playoff Race Picture for each of the Six Teams.

What’s at stake for each team in MPL X as part of their Playoff chase:

1) Transformers (14 points) had already qualified for the MPL X Playoff’s, prior to today’s match vs. Justice League. With today’s win over Justice League, Transformers will finish the round-robin stage of MPL X as the number 1 ranked team.

Transformers thus have a lock on one of the top two spots and have qualified for Qualifier-1 on Wednesday, August 8th.

Transformers have one match still remaining in the round-robin stage. The result of this match does not impact their position in the Table at the end of the round-robin stage.

2) Justice League (11 points) and Incredibles (11 points) are through to the MPL X Playoff’s, with one match remaining in the round-robin stage for each – vs. Avengers and Suicide Squad, respectively.

Both teams are fighting it out for a chance to finish in the second spot, and is likely to come down to results (win/loss) in their last round-robin matches, coupled with Net Run Rate (NRR).

3) Suicide Squad (9 points) have one foot into the MPL X Playoff’s, but are not yet through. They have a number of ways to get into the Playoff’s, and some ways to get out of the Playoff’s as well.

Two wins by good margins in their remaining two matches could get Suicide Squad into the second spot. Two wins will leave the Suicide Squad ranked at least third at the end of the round-robin stage.

Potentially, one win by a good margin and one wash-out could also get them into the second spot – a win by a good margin for Suicide Squad vs. X-Men, a Justice League loss to the Avengers, and a wash-out in the Suicide Squad vs. Incredibles match.

One win and one loss will suffice for Suicide Squad to make it to the MPL X Playoff’s – as either the third ranked team, or as the fourth ranked team.

Two loses for Suicide Squad may still get them into the MPL X Playoff’s – X-Men having bested Suicide Squad will need to lose to Transformers in their last round-robin match.

Two loses for Suicide Squad, coupled with two wins for X-Men, will cost the Suicide Squad a spot in the MPL X Playoff’s.

Two loses for Suicide Squad, coupled with one win and one-loss for X-Men, opens the door for Avengers.

4) Avengers (7 points) are on the other side of the spectrum as compared to Suicide Squad, in that they are not quite out of their hunt for a spot in the MPL X Playoff’s, but need a lot to go their way to get there.

Avengers will need to win very big in their last match against Justice League, and need other results to go their way.

If Avengers win by 60 runs, they will need:
* X-Men to defeat Suicide Squad,
* Transformers to defeat X-Men, and
* Incredibles to defeat Suicide Squad.

In this process, the combined margin of runs in the two loses for Suicide Squad must be 112 runs or more, for the Avengers’ NRR to improve over that of Suicide Squad, with the two teams potentially tied on 9 points.

5) The X-Men (6 points) MPL X Playoff hunt is also in a spot of bother.

They have two matches remaining. They need two wins in these two matches, and then need the Incredibles to defeat Suicide Squad. This scenario gets the X-Men into the MPL X Playoff’s as the fourth ranked team.

Potentially a win for X-Men by a large margin vs. Suicide Squad, coupled with a wash-out in the X-Men vs. Transformers match, along with a loss for Suicide Squad vs. Incredibles, can also get the X-Men into the MPL X Playoff – this scenario could see two (X-Men, Suicide Squad), or even three teams (Avengers being the third team), tied on 9 points, with NRR breaking the tie.

However, with the X-Men vs. Transformers match being scheduled on the same day as the Suicide Squad vs. Incredibles match, a wash-out in only one match is unlikely.

If the X-Men vs. Suicide Squad match is washed-out, it is game over for the X-Men (and the Avengers).

MPL X: Player’s Auction, Tournament Format, Playing Conditions

The 2018 season of the MathWorks Premier League (MPL), will be it’s 10th edition. We also have a ‘special announcement’ this season. Hence the 2018 season of the MPL will be referred to as ‘MPL X’.

Player’s Auction

  • 1.0: Each of the six teams in MPL X will get a purse of $101 to start with.
  • 1.1: The ‘Average Stock Price’ (from MPL 2017) of the captain of each of the six teams, and the player retained by the captains of the six teams is deducted from the purse of each team.
  • 1.2: With current enrollments at 81 players, three of the six teams will be able to form a squad of 14 players, while the other three teams will form a squad of 13 players.
  • 1.3: At the start of the Player’s Auction, the team to nominate the first player will be chosen randomly.
  • 1.4: The player nominated will be auctioned off via open-bidding.
    • 1.4.1: Each of the six teams will bid and counter-bid each other, until one team emerges with a bid than no other team raises.
    • 1.4.2: Thus, the team that bids the highest will receive the services of the player who was auctioned.
  • 1.5: The team to the immediate left of the team that nominated the first player, will then nominate a player for open-bidding.
    • 1.5.1: 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 will then apply.
  • 1.6: Do note, that the next player nominated for open-bidding is by the team to the immediate left of the team that nominated the previous player, and not by the team that the player joined.
  • 1.7: The pattern of the team to the left nominating a player for open-bidding will continue until each team has had a chance to nominate a player on three different occasions.
    • 1.7.1: Thus 18 player’s will be part of the open-bidding process.
  • 1.8: After the open-bidding auction format for the first 18 players, we will move to a silent bidding format for the remaining players in the general auction.
  • 1.9: Starting with the 19th player in the general auction, through to the end of the auction, a player will be nominated randomly by the Auctioneer.
    • 1.9.1: Silent bidding will ensue.
    • 1.9.1: Once all the six bids are in, the Auctioneer will reveal the individual bids.
    • 1.9.3: If multiple teams submit the same bid for a player, these teams alone will enter an open-bidding auction for the services of the nominated player.
      • 1.9.3.1: The team to submit their bid first, gets the opening bid at that price, while the other team(s) will be required to raise their bid to stay in the auction for the player.
  • 1.10: If all teams pass on a player – by bidding $0 for the player – the player will move to the end of the auction. This player will be held from the auction till all the other players have been nominated at least once.
  • 1.11: All the players need to be bought at a min. price of $1.  This means that if a team has 7 players in the squad and $20 left in its pool, then the maximum it can bid for the 8th player is [$20 – (min players – current players + 1) => 20 – (14 – 7) + 1 => $14].

How the ‘Three Musketeers’ of Transformers were formed?

When the decision was made that a new team will be formed, I was really excited at the prospect of having the opportunity to captain the new team.

Though I had lingering loyalty towards the Incredibles, it was easy to set that aside once I was discarded by the Incredibles. It was now an opportunity to lead a new team to the title of MPL champions.

As the captain of the 5th team, I had the whole pool of players available after the other 4 captains had picked theirs.  There were plenty of good players left in the pool  and the following were by top 5- Pritish, Dipesh, Anil, Anuj and  Koundi.

Dipesh was an obvious choice as he has consistently performed brilliantly as a bowler and has been the top pace bowler in the last 2 MPLs (only second to Rafeeq in the overall standings). He is also a left hander (valuable commodity in the MPL) and a solid striker of the ball.

My second decision was made easy by Rohith’s decision to not retain Anil.  Anil is an excellent bowler, batsman and fielder and can single handedly win games for Transformers. I expect Anil  to be vying for MVP  crown this year en route to lifting the MPL trophy with the Transformers.

MPL 2014 Auction

The MPL 2014 auction is upon us and will be held on 17th June, 2014.  Unlike the previous auctions, I unfortunately will not be hosting the event, but will hand over responsibility to Kunal K. Rest assured, this time’s auction page will be  a step up from the previous in terms of technology.  This auction will also be the largest in MPL history  with 55 players in the auction pool after the ‘Three Musketeers’ from each team.

AUCTION RULES

  1. Players will be presented randomly in the auction (Round 1)
  2. The players base price will be set based on their average stock price from MPL 2013.  For new players, the base price will start at 1.
  3. Teams will openly bid for the players. (If multiple teams show interest at base price, then teams have to outbid one another for the player). If there is a stalemate or no team is willing to bid at base price, then the player will go unsold.
  4. After the end of all players being presented once (Round 1) the unsold players will be randomly presented with their base price reduced by 50% (with a minimum of 1) (Round 2). Players can again go unsold, which will then further reduce their base price by 50% in the next round.
  5. Teams are capped to 14 members each.
  6. If a team exhausts its funds, then it will sit out of auction till either other teams have exhausted their funds or other teams have their 14 players.  The team will then get the remaining unsold players. If multiple teams have exhausted their funds, then the team which has the maximum number of players will get to choose first from the remaining players. Each team will then choose one player till they reach their cap. (Incase of a tie in the number of players in each team,  the team that exhausted its funds latest, get to choose first). All players chosen will still have a stock value of 1.

Please feel free to post any clarifications on Facebook. I will soon upload a list of all players in the pool and their starting base price.

MPL 2014: Rules, Player Retentions, and the likes

With MPL 2014, we are changing the structure of the tournament by adding a fifth team. As a result, we are changing rules as applicable to how a team captain is selected, and how many player’s are retained. Also changing is how much money a team has left, for the player’s auction, after having retained player’s.

New Captain

Ankit, Mayank, Rafeeq, Rahul,

Leaders of legions of super heroes. You have one last duty as the captain of your respective MPL 2013 super hero teams. That duty is to transfer the title of captain to someone on your squad from MPL 2013. You have till end of day Wednesday – June 4th – to announce the new captain. Any of the captain’s from MPL 2013 can stay on as the captain for MPL 2014.

Player Retention

The new captain will then select two more people from his team’s MPL 2013 squad. Thus, each team will have a core of three players heading into the player’s auction.

Each of the four team’s will, instead of having a ‘Fantastic Four’, have their own ‘Three Musketeers’, this year.
