How and why the ‘MPL 2012 Justice League’ retained the players they did

This is the third post, in a four-part post. I’d pinged each of the four MPL 2012 team captains to send me, in their own words, their thoughts on how they chose, and why they retained the players that they did.

The following is what Srikanth, the former captain of Justice League, sent in.

In last year’s MPL, Justice League was added among great excitement and fun. As part of the auction, we were able to acquire players with experience, and players who were debuting in MPL that year. We wanted to make sure we had right bunch of people to have a mix of both youngsters and experience.

This year as well, the motto of Justice League shall remain the same, to encourage new talent along with experience provided by many of our senior players so the cricket remains what it must be, a mixed bag. Considering this in mind, these are the following three players I retained along with myself (being the captain last year) for this year’s edition of MPL:

1) Mayank Advani: Mayank has been one of the senior players for the MPL, and has been a great ambassador for it. He is a perfect example of how a team player should be. Apart from being a good all-rounder, his captaincy skills are sometime underrated. He is what people call ‘thinking-captain’. Along with his composed batting and decent bowling, he is a very good fielder and can certainly save runs for his side with his agility. I think it will be a great season for the team to play under him this year. He is the captain of Justice League for MPL 2013.

2) Ganesh Iyer: Experience with immense passion for cricket is what sums up Ganesh for me. He has been the reason for the start of the entire cricket we play today and is probably the most experienced when it comes to MPL. With time, people tend to fade out on their skills and interest when it comes to sports, but Ganesh has been one of those rare people who not only improve with every year passing but also get young on the field and compete with all the young players on the field, be it batting, bowling or fielding. The main reason for his retention is the experience he can provide to the side and his very valuable impetus to the batting, bowling and fielding departments.

3) Kaushik Nagarajan: Kaushik has been one of the finds of the season last year in MPL. He was also probably one of the costlier purchases last year. His bowling is pacy, and there are very few who can match him in that department. Many players tend to go wayward with pace but he is someone who can consistently bowl good lines along with increasing pace. He has been one of the most economical bowlers and has been the main architect of the low scores that opposition made against Justice League last year. Along with his bowling, his batting skills are equally brilliant. On his day, he can dispatch the ball to any corner of the ground that he intends to and when required can provide the innings with stability by rotating the strike at will. He will definitely be a great asset to Justice League in this year’s MPL as well along with all the other great purchases made.
