How and why the ‘MPL 2012 Incredibles’ retained the players they did

This is a four-part post. I’d pinged each of the four MPL 2012 team captains to send me, in their own words, their thoughts on how they chose, and why they retained the players that they did.

The following is what Onomitra, the former Mr. Incredible, sent in.

Incredibles had a lot of really good cricketers and I am sure all of them would have loved to continue in Incredibles. As an outgoing captain and selector for the next team, this was a very good place to be in, but at the same time, an awkward puzzle to solve. In the end I went with Chirag, Shreenath, Nachiket and Rahul.

I went with Chirag for the same reason for which I chose him last year. In a team, you need somebody like Chirag, Priyank or Ganesh, who can bat, bowl and also has the experience to manage the team in the captain’s absence. His records from last season just bolstered that theory.

Shreenath was a difficult decision. He will not be available for most part of the season. However, he proved to be too valuable to be released from Incredibles. Also, along with Chirag, the team will need Shreenath’s experience.

Nachiket was one of the best number three last year and a great fielder as well. Also, it will be a crime to break the synergy between Shreenath and Nachiket batting together.

While Chirag is a person to stay the innings, Nachiket and Shreenath increase the pace, I needed somebody to provide the middle order impetus and be the finisher. Rahul is that person. Thus I hope that I have managed to cover the batting range by these four.

Next came the question of choosing the skipper. Regarding captaincy, I was determined to give somebody new the chance and have fun managing the game. Shreenath did not want to be the captain. So it was either Rahul or Nachiket. I went with Rahul because he has more experience playing cricket in MathWorks.
