How the ‘Three Musketeers’ of the ‘MPL 2014 Avengers’ were formed

Rewind 2013 – MPL final, which the Avengers were not in. Each team played their part and had their moments. Each team was punctuated by terrific highs and lows. But, one team stood at the last spot, like they wrote a script of their own. It was temperament and decision making taking a back seat, that took apart an in-form team to the last spot. As if that wasn’t enough, the captain didn’t even cross the double digit score of his own. To a certain degree, such effort brought the “spirit to fight until you prevail and impossible is nothing” down to zero. A player, with no cricketing mind, Ankit can only be punished in one way – captain the team again.

As the season progressed, Avengers were slowly but surely been identified as “Losing XI”. This was evident from my performance. In spite of sheer brilliance from multiple members of the Avengers squad:

  1. Amol scored the most runs in the MPL 2013.
  2. He also had the highest inning score of 49* in MPL 2013.
  3. Amol shows up as one of the top 10 players in MPL 2013.
  4. Vijay appeared in top 10 wicket taking bowler’s list.
  5. Vivek and Vijay were the 2nd best in fielding points.

Avengers now needed a leader, one who goes through the whole thing again, who might learn from my mistakes. And who better to do so, than myself, the first Avenger.

When the decision was made that a new team will be formed, I was really excited at the prospect of probably not coming last, but then they announced the team and it made that dream a little hard.

Knowing that I will be leading Avengers again, I wanted Amol in the team, but was not sure if Amol wanted to be an Avenger. Once that question was out of the way, Amol was confirmed as the second Avenger.

Now it was between Anand, Vivek and Adai. However, Anand pointed out that Vivek and Adai would be a better choice for their role as all rounders. Adai didn’t play almost the entire last season, but I know he can be a great guy to have on the team. Similar to Vivek, he can bat as well as bowl. And folks who have played with both Vivek and Adai know what I am talking about. In the end, since Adai’s name starts with “A” as well – I decided to go for “A”dai to join the “A”vengers along with “A”mol and “A”nkit.

MPL 2013 All-Star team

The MPL, which started as three squads of 10 in 2009, had grown to four squads of 15 by 2013. The MPL 2013 final was a match that will live-on in memories for ages to come; a match worthy of a finals billing. Shreenath, Nachi, Priyank, Rohith and Anuj with the bat, and Anil, GK and Dipesh, with the ball stood out in an epic.

As we take a step back and review the entire MPL season, we reflect on some very memorable moments and some outstanding performances. We will always remember the brilliant counter-attacks from Amol, taking on the X-Men and Incredibles in back-to-back matches. Same goes for the consistent top-order knocks by Pritish, which gave his team the ideal platform to bat the opponents out or chase down any target. Kaushik’s brilliance with the bat and ball day-in day-out. Rafeeq’s tally of 21 wickets, the most ever in a single MPL season.

Those are just a few examples of many such players who stood tall for their respective teams. The challenge then was, how do we recognize these players, their performance, and more specifically, their contribution in enriching the MPL season.

It was around this time that the NBA All-Star game was approaching. I coupled that with how the NBA, at the end of the season, recognizes the top five players across all 30 teams, coupled with the respective positions on the court, based on their performance through the season past.  These five form the All-NBA team.

That was the key towards arriving with the listing below that carries the MPL 2013 ‘All-Star’ team. 11 of the best players from MPL 2013 based on their performances, the points accumulated based on their runs and wickets tallies.

That the list below will be controversial owing to the absence of certain names is a given. However, to credit the players who didn’t make the cut, it wasn’t an easy list to round-off. Most of you will agree that a number of the players in the 11 below have rightfully earned their spots. It was the remaining spots that were tough to select for.

Players who were in consideration, but didn’t make the cut were Anil (X-Men), Koundi (X-Men), Rohith (X-Men), Ganesh I (Justice League),  Abhijit W (Justice League) Vijay (Avengers), Aravind (Avengers), Abhijit B (Incredibles).

That being said, here’s your MPL 2013 All-Star team. It has four batsmen, five all-rounders, and two bowlers.

  1. Amol (Avengers): 122 runs, average 20.33, strike-rate 100, highest-score 49, batting points 379.1
  2. Pritish (X-Men): 114 runs, average 16.29, strike-rate 67.46, highest-score 24, batting points 383.78
  3. Nachiket (Incredibles): 92 runs, average 15.33, strike-rate 78.63, highest-score 23, batting points 275.61
  4. Shreenath (Incredibles): 102 runs, average 14.57, strike-rate 100, highest-score 27, batting points 325.28
  5. Kaushik (Justice League): 106 runs, average 17.67, strike-rate 77.37, highest-score 25, batting points 392.95 || 7 wickets, economy-rate 3.98, strike-rate 16.71, best-bowling 3-15, bowling points 151.5
  6. Priyank (Incredibles): 93 runs, average 15.50, strike-rate 77.5, highest-score 30, batting points 291.78 || 8 wickets, economy-rate 4.11, strike-rate 13.5, best-bowling 3-12, bowling points 212.95
  7. Yashwanth (X-Men): 82 runs, average 11.71, strike-rate 80.39, highest-score 21, batting points 240.86 || 11 wickets, economy-rate 4.35, strike-rate 12.55, best-bowling 3-18, bowling points 216.47
  8. Chirag (Incredibles): 54 runs, average 13.5, strike-rate 78.26, highest-score 25, batting points 155.64 || 7 wickets, economy-rate 4.9, strike-rate 13.57, best-bowling 3-13, bowling points 156.15
  9. Rahul (Incredibles): 38 runs, average 6.33, strike-rate 108.57, highest-score 19, batting points 105.44 || 11 wickets, economy-rate 4.56, strike-rate 9.82, best-bowling 3-9, bowling points 273.98
  10. Dipesh (Incredibles): 12 wickets, economy-rate 4.44, strike-rate 8, best-bowling 3-3, bowling points 274.7
  11. Rafeeq (X-Men): 21 wickets, economy-rate 4.59, strike-rate 7.38, best-bowling 4-6, bowling points 409.74

How the ‘Three Musketeers’ of Transformers were formed?

When the decision was made that a new team will be formed, I was really excited at the prospect of having the opportunity to captain the new team.

Though I had lingering loyalty towards the Incredibles, it was easy to set that aside once I was discarded by the Incredibles. It was now an opportunity to lead a new team to the title of MPL champions.

As the captain of the 5th team, I had the whole pool of players available after the other 4 captains had picked theirs.  There were plenty of good players left in the pool  and the following were by top 5- Pritish, Dipesh, Anil, Anuj and  Koundi.

Dipesh was an obvious choice as he has consistently performed brilliantly as a bowler and has been the top pace bowler in the last 2 MPLs (only second to Rafeeq in the overall standings). He is also a left hander (valuable commodity in the MPL) and a solid striker of the ball.

My second decision was made easy by Rohith’s decision to not retain Anil.  Anil is an excellent bowler, batsman and fielder and can single handedly win games for Transformers. I expect Anil  to be vying for MVP  crown this year en route to lifting the MPL trophy with the Transformers.

How the ‘Three Musketeers’ of the ‘MPL 2014 Justice League’ were formed

This is the part one of the second, in a four-part post. I’d pinged each of the four MPL 2013 team captains to send me, in their own words, their thoughts on why they chose the player they did, to captain their respective squads for MPL 2014.

Additionally, the captain of each of the MPL 2014 squads have been requested to submit their reasons for retaining the players that they did, towards forming the respective ‘Three Musketeers’ of each team.

The following is what Sir Mayank, the former captain of Justice League, sent in.

As the season progressed, Justice League was slowly but surely been identified as “Kaushik’s XI”. This was evident from his statistics. Kaushik,

  1. scored the highest number of points and hence was the number #1 ranked player in the league.
  2. has the highest number of points accumulated as a batsman.
  3. was the 3rd highest run scorer in the league.
  4. has the best Economy Rate for someone who has taken at least 5 wickets in the season.

Justice League now needs a strong leader, one who leads the team by example. Who better than Kaushik, the heart and soul of the team.

Kaushik’s thoughts, on why he retained Mayank and Ganesh are as follows

I was mainly looking for two all rounders. Having said that, there were quite a few players in Justice League who can bat and bowl, and are good in both. My second criteria was experience in MPL specifically about the other players in the club.

Mayank proved in last season that he is a bat with a great temperament. Without the burden of captaincy, I am sure he will only do better. He is also a very under-rated bowler. I believe that Mayank is a great bowler just because he is very disciplined and knows what he is doing.

Ganesh is undoubtedly the most skilled and dedicated player we have had. Justice League has put him in tough situations and has curtailed him from playing his natural game. I believe that we as a team need to give him a better platform this time.

Above all, all three of us are so different in our attitude and approach to the game, which I think will be the key in striking a balance. We are so desperate to re-write history and none others would know better as to how it feels to lose after fighting so hard.

How the ‘Three Musketeers’ of the ‘MPL 2014 X-Men’ were formed

This is the part one of the first, in a four-part post. I’d pinged each of the four MPL 2013 team captains to send me, in their own words, their thoughts on why they chose the player they did, as captain for their respective squads for MPL 2014.

Additionally, the captain of each of the MPL 2014 squads have been requested to submit their reasons for retaining the players that they did, towards forming the respective ‘Three Musketeers’ of each team.

The following is what Rafeeq, the former captain of X-Men, sent in.

Rewind 2013 – MPL final, the stakes were high as much as the expectations. Each side played their best cards and the moments in the game were punctuated by terrific highs and lows. But, one player stood between Incredibles and their victory, like he wrote a script of his own.

It was temperament and belligerence coming to the fore, that took apart an in-form attack to bits. If it wasn’t enough, you’d take the match to a super-over and post 18 runs to defend.

To a certain degree, the effort restored the “spirit to fight until you prevail and impossible is nothing”. A team player, with a keen cricketing mind, Rohith would make an excellent captain for MPL 2014.

Rohith’s thoughts, on why he retained Rafeeq and Yashwanth are as follows

My first choice, retaining Yashwanth, is fairly straight forward and there wasn’t much thought process behind this. His stats in all the departments of the game speak for themselves and is the ideal man to have in the team.

My second choice required lot more thinking and sometimes to iterate, to lay the groundwork for my decision. First of all, let’s look at the candidates, excluding Yash, that could have been retained. Rafeeq, Anil, Koundi, Pritish, Anuj and GK would have made it to the list.

Looking at the list, Anil would been the obvious choice, not just because of his batting, and bowling, but also for his fielding.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t in-line with my thought process (I would say MPL format) and I wasn’t willing to let go of a bowler, the highest wicket taker last season, who holds no competition in the bowling department. One other critical factor I would say is that although Rafeeq sometimes tends to fare badly against good opposition batsmen, he is very effective against average and lower order batsmen. This might not be obvious to many others and is what I have noticed of Rafeeq over the past year and half. Lastly, new team this year meant Rafeeq will stack up the wicket columns.

MPL 2014 Auction

The MPL 2014 auction is upon us and will be held on 17th June, 2014.  Unlike the previous auctions, I unfortunately will not be hosting the event, but will hand over responsibility to Kunal K. Rest assured, this time’s auction page will be  a step up from the previous in terms of technology.  This auction will also be the largest in MPL history  with 55 players in the auction pool after the ‘Three Musketeers’ from each team.

AUCTION RULES

  1. Players will be presented randomly in the auction (Round 1)
  2. The players base price will be set based on their average stock price from MPL 2013.  For new players, the base price will start at 1.
  3. Teams will openly bid for the players. (If multiple teams show interest at base price, then teams have to outbid one another for the player). If there is a stalemate or no team is willing to bid at base price, then the player will go unsold.
  4. After the end of all players being presented once (Round 1) the unsold players will be randomly presented with their base price reduced by 50% (with a minimum of 1) (Round 2). Players can again go unsold, which will then further reduce their base price by 50% in the next round.
  5. Teams are capped to 14 members each.
  6. If a team exhausts its funds, then it will sit out of auction till either other teams have exhausted their funds or other teams have their 14 players.  The team will then get the remaining unsold players. If multiple teams have exhausted their funds, then the team which has the maximum number of players will get to choose first from the remaining players. Each team will then choose one player till they reach their cap. (Incase of a tie in the number of players in each team,  the team that exhausted its funds latest, get to choose first). All players chosen will still have a stock value of 1.

Please feel free to post any clarifications on Facebook. I will soon upload a list of all players in the pool and their starting base price.

MPL 2014: Rules, Player Retentions, and the likes

With MPL 2014, we are changing the structure of the tournament by adding a fifth team. As a result, we are changing rules as applicable to how a team captain is selected, and how many player’s are retained. Also changing is how much money a team has left, for the player’s auction, after having retained player’s.

New Captain

Ankit, Mayank, Rafeeq, Rahul,

Leaders of legions of super heroes. You have one last duty as the captain of your respective MPL 2013 super hero teams. That duty is to transfer the title of captain to someone on your squad from MPL 2013. You have till end of day Wednesday – June 4th – to announce the new captain. Any of the captain’s from MPL 2013 can stay on as the captain for MPL 2014.

Player Retention

The new captain will then select two more people from his team’s MPL 2013 squad. Thus, each team will have a core of three players heading into the player’s auction.

Each of the four team’s will, instead of having a ‘Fantastic Four’, have their own ‘Three Musketeers’, this year.

MPL Memories – part I

The MPL is five years old. The sixth season will be upon us this summer. As we endure Snowmageddon 2014 behind four walls, holding out hope for some required and much deserved warm weather, to summer, and the season ahead, let’s re-visit some of the moments from past season of MPL.

The following are some of the key moments or memories from MPL 1 or MPL 2009.

Birth of the MPL

Summer was just about done, and fall was around the corner. We were looking to get more cricket through the remaining few weeks of the season – our club was about 30 members strong at the time. The second season of the IPL had finished earlier in the year, and it seemed like a good idea to start our own league on similar lines.

After a few initial emails and discussions, a date was set. The first player auction was held behind closed doors, in the ‘Heck’ conference room, on 8th September 2009. The MPL was born.

MPL 2013 – Player review from a stock perspective

The ‘Fantasy Cricket Stock Exchange (FCSE)‘ as a concept was born during spring of 2013 – implemented and deployed for MPL 2013. The Fantasy Cricket aspect included ‘stocks’ (players) being reevaluated, based on their performance on the field.

The ‘Fantastic Four’ were the four members retained by each team, from among their MPL 2012 season squads for the MPL 2013 season. The ‘Offer Price’ for members of the ‘Fantastic Four’ was preset at $20, $18, $16, and $14 – the member of a team’s ‘Fantastic Four’ with the highest points tally in MPL 2012 was assigned the highest price, and so on.

As we review performance of players in MPL 2013 from a stock perspective, captured below are some of the key data-points for each stock

  • Offer Price‘: Price paid for a  player’s service at the “Player’s Auction” for MPL 2013
  • Closing‘: Stock price for the given player after his last match in MPL 2013
  • Low‘: Lowest price point for this stock
  • Peak‘: Highest price point for this stock
  • Average‘: Average price point for this stock
  • ‘*’: Indicates a player who was part of “Fantastic Four” of the respective teams in MPL 2013

Fantasy Cricket Stock Exchange – MPL edition

Q) What is the ‘Fantasy Cricket Stock Exchange (FCSE)’?
A) The ‘Fantasy Cricket Stock Exchange (FCSE)’ – MPL edition – is a pseudo stock market created for Fantasy Cricket. It is a new concept, born after playing Fantasy Football (NFL) and Fantasy Cricket (IPL).

Everyone registered to play in MPL 2013, is a stock. As part of the IPO, the value for each stock is the auction price for that player in the MPL 2013 auction.
